MERIDIAN, MS — Democratic congressional nominee Michael A. Chiaradio attended Mississippi’s public redistricting hearing Thursday night at Meridian Community College, where residents offered their perspectives on the future of the state’s legislative maps.
The Meridian hearing was part of a series of public hearings being held across Mississippi to receive comments and suggestions from citizens as lawmakers consider redistricting.
Chiaradio listened as Mississippians expressed different views about how the state should approach the process. Some emphasized Mississippi’s progress and argued that race should not drive the drawing of political boundaries, while many others expressed concern about ensuring that new maps do not dilute the voices of Black voters and communities.
Chiaradio believes those ideas do not have to be incompatible.
Mississippi has made tremendous progress, and that progress should be recognized. At the same time, fair representation requires a transparent process that gives Mississippians a meaningful voice in choosing their representatives.
Chiaradio is the Democratic nominee for Congress in Mississippi’s Third Congressional District and has campaigned throughout the district on lowering healthcare costs, investing in infrastructure, strengthening public schools, expanding local food systems and creating greater economic opportunity in Mississippi communities.
