Shubuta, MS — Democratic nominee for Congress Michael A. Chiaradio released a detailed statement Thursday outlining his position on artificial intelligence and the rapid development of data centers across the United States.
Chiaradio expressed support for continued American leadership in artificial intelligence while calling for stronger federal environmental standards governing the infrastructure necessary to support it.
His proposals include requiring data centers to offset their net freshwater consumption through advanced water purification, protecting productive agricultural land from unnecessary development, and exploring more land-efficient data center designs.
The statement also connects increased data center demand to Chiaradio’s broader proposal for major national investments in infrastructure. Rather than treating growing energy and water demand solely as a constraint, Chiaradio argues that the United States should use increasing demand as an impetus to expand capacity.
Chiaradio also reiterated his proposal to change how federal money is invested in private, revenue-producing projects, with the long-term goal of expanding capital ownership. However, he cautioned against this framework for conventional data center construction, citing potential profitability pressures and risks associated with the depreciation of computing hardware.
The statement also addresses potential workforce displacement from artificial intelligence. Chiaradio argues that major national investments can create additional productive opportunities as technological advancement changes the labor market.
Finally, Chiaradio called for federal safeguards governing artificial intelligence, including transparency requirements, privacy protections, and human oversight for critical decisions.
