PHILADELPHIA, MS — Democratic nominee for Congress Michael A. Chiaradio attended the 62nd Annual Memorial Service honoring James Chaney, Andrew Goodman, and Michael Schwerner last weekend at Historic Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Philadelphia.
The annual service commemorates the three civil rights workers who were murdered during Freedom Summer while working to advance voting rights, civil rights, and human rights in Mississippi. The event brought together community leaders, clergy, elected officials, and residents to reflect on their sacrifice and the lasting impact of their work.
Chiaradio joined attendees in honoring the memory of Chaney, Goodman, and Schwerner and listening to a series of speakers who reflected on the progress that has been made since Freedom Summer and the work that remains ahead. He described the event as both moving and motivating, noting that the service was focused not only on remembering the past but also on maintaining a vision for the future.
As he continues traveling throughout Mississippi’s Third Congressional District, Chiaradio said he has developed a deep appreciation for the people of Philadelphia and Neshoba County. He noted that the community has consistently welcomed him and that events such as the memorial service reinforce the importance of preserving the legacy of those who worked to expand freedom and opportunity for future generations.
The service concluded with a renewed commitment to civic engagement and community involvement, themes that have remained central to the annual commemoration for more than six decades.
